The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which was supposed to help, was now being looked at closely because of claims that it had been “weaponized” against people who supported former President Donald Trump.
It all started with a simple find. One FEMA official instructed workers in Florida, who were clearing up the damage and providing immediate aid, to “avoid homes advertising Trump.” People who had “Trump 2024” signs in their houses or yards watched as trucks went right by their homes without stopping. Someone inside FEMA leaked internal messages to the media, showing how some aid workers entered data marking homes with “no contact per leadership” after seeing Trump-supporting signs.
The story got around very quickly. There was outrage when news sites showed footage of homes with pro-Trump signs that FEMA had missed. Soon, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis spoke out against what he saw as the “blatant weaponization” of government resources. DeSantis said it was “targeted discrimination against Floridians” and ordered a probe right away.
