Mayor Karen Bass of Los Angeles pledged to remove “obstacles” for new police recruits and identify officers with “right-wing domestic extremist organizations.”
Bass’s public safety goals, she wants to remove “obstacles” for police recruits who don’t initially qualify for training to diversify the LAPD. Police union leaders are skeptical.
Bass’ police reform goals include provisions and deadlines for reporting progress. A deputy mayor will “evaluate the personnel process and identify obstacles to entry for recruits who fail to qualify for training” with a “third party.”
“We think this particular provision or goal or idea is dangerous,” Los Angeles Police Protective League (LAPPL) spokesperson Tom Saggau told Fox News Digital.

Look out. “There are recruits which have been in the academy just can’t score the minimum requirements for a physical fitness test,” he said. “Maximum score is 100, minimum is 50. Some score under 10. Dangerous.”
The provision states recommendations to remove obstacles will be considered, particularly those related to “ethnic groups disproportionately left out of new officer training.”

Saggau said the provision lowers police standards because new hires who did not initially qualify during training are shown not to “possess the mental fitness or the physical fitness ability to be a police officer.”
“Disaster!” Saggau said. “So, lowering standards is a dangerous precedent.” “Identify, discipline, and/or terminate officers associated with right-wing domestic extremist organizations” using Justice Department data is another goal summary provision. LAPD must report on this provision in August.
Saggau said LAPPL believes it should be right-wing, left-wing, foreign, and domestic. “We believe law enforcement should not associate with more organizations than the narrow group listed in the document.”
Mayor Bass told the Los Angeles Times she prioritizes “crime reduction, personnel reform, alternative response and community policing” after her goals summary release. While addressing the staffing shortage caused by retirements and other departures, she is hiring more homicide detectives.
